Sticky Sweet began by chance when the Dow sisters founded a Thai-style sticky rice stall in the Public Market House in Monument Square. Even through the winter months, flavors such as peanut butter cookie, lemon chip, red velvet brownie and coffee always draw lines of customers. Now the family-run shop on Cumberland Avenue is cranking out enough ice cream to supply pints to 15 stores in southern Maine and cones to its steady line of customers. And then over the summer our dad and stepmom also dropped everything to come help and work at our scoop shop.” But our brother dropped everything last spring to come and take over production so that I could spend time with my new baby. “I didn’t see how I was going to be able to keep up with production with a new baby in tow. “We were unsure about the future,” says Dow, who founded the artisanal vegan ice cream company with her sister Kelley Dow in 2017. Then co-founder Ashley Dow learned she was pregnant. While their flavors rotate frequently, they always carry at least one dairy-free sorbet.Two hot, humid summers ago, plant-based ice cream maker Sticky Sweet was selling so much ice cream out of its Portland scoop shop it had to temporarily stop supplying retailers. Multiple locations later, the creamery is still known for its whimsical flavors. When Ample Hills Creamery first opened in Prospect Heights back in 2011 it quickly became a destination for its made from scratch ice cream. Note: the coconut cream is sweetened with raw honey so it’s not vegan. Top it with Spiced Turmeric Honey, CBD Cacao, Black Sesame Granola, and more. This plant-based treat will be available at Springbone Kitchen in the West Village all summer long. It’s hard to believe the creamery coconut soft serve dessert isn’t dairy based. Most of their seasonal sorbets are dairy free and some of their water-based “cream” gelatos, hazelnut, chocolate, almond and pistachio are also plant-based. The Brooklyn shop specializes in sweet treats and refreshing flavors found in the Caribbean. Creme and Cocoaīiting into a creme and cocoa flavor is like being transported to a beachy island. Try them for yourself at Smorgasburg or pick up a pint at Fairway Markets. Their ice creams are made with hazelnut and almond milks. The lactose-intolerant founders of Alchemy Creamery know how to make a delicious vegan, gluten free ice cream. Available in five different flavors, our favorite is the Horchata. You can find plant-based ice cream brand JAWEA’s pints in stores throughout the city. And Van Leeuwen turns 10 this year-we’ll have a pint for that. Today, the company offers eight flavors of creamy, rich and luscious vegan ice cream as well as a rotating selection of vegan specialties. Juice Press recently began dishing out two flavors (Chocolate and Fountain of Youth) of organic, plant-based soft serve ice cream at its Whole Foods 365 and Empire State Building locations.
